The Business Advisory Committee scheduled the election for a new deputy speaker on September 12, the session’s concluding day. Shira, 79, a senior legislator from Resubelpara (ST) constituency in North Garo Hills, reportedly resigned following directions from the National People’s Party high command, reflecting internal party strategy ahead of the 2028 elections. A St. Anthony’s College graduate and longtime social worker, Shira previously served as deputy speaker from 2018 and was re-elected unopposed in 2023, ending his tenure abruptly with this resignation.
