EC warns political parties against using AI-generated content that mimics real individuals without consent

The Election Commission (EC) has directed all national and regional political parties not to publish or share AI-generated content depicting individuals without their consent, calling it a “deep threat” that can mislead voters and distort fair campaigning. The advisory, issued amid the Bihar elections, reiterates earlier guidelines from 2024 and 2025, requiring all AI-generated materials to be clearly labelled as “AI-generated” or “synthetic.” It mandates disclosure of the creator’s identity, record-keeping of such content, and removal of misleading media within three hours. The EC emphasized compliance with IT Rules, 2021, to maintain electoral transparency and fairness.​
