Australia expands social media ban for under-16s to include Reddit and Kick

Australia will enforce a social media ban for children under 16 from December 10, including Reddit, Kick, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, X, and YouTube. Communications Minister Anika Wells said the measure aims to protect children from harmful online targeting and ensure parents’ peace of mind. Platforms have had a year to comply since the online safety law passed in November 2024. Despite opposition from over 140 academics calling the ban a “blunt” tool, the policy is seen as a major global test case as other nations monitor Australia’s efforts to safeguard minors online.
