| Updated On: 15-Nov-2025 @ 12:36 pmEthiopia has confirmed its first Marburg virus outbreak after nine cases emerged in the southern Omo region. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom praised Ethiopia’s quick and transparent response. The outbreak follows investigations into suspected viral haemorrhagic fever cases. Marburg, a highly severe filovirus similar to Ebola, spreads through contact with bodily fluids and has no specific treatment or vaccine. Symptoms include fever, rash and severe bleeding. Health authorities are isolating patients, conducting screenings, and tracing contacts, while WHO and Africa CDC monitor potential cross-border risks, especially with nearby South Sudan. The public has been urged to stay calm and follow health guidelines.
