Assam Andolan: The People’s Struggle

The Assam Andolan, or Assam Movement (1979–1985), was a major political and social movement in Assam, aimed at addressing the issue of illegal immigration from Bangladesh. Led by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP), the movement mobilized citizens through protests, strikes, and rallies. The agitation demanded the detection and deportation of illegal immigrants while safeguarding Assamese culture and political rights. The movement culminated in the Assam Accord of 1985, which became a milestone in preserving Assam’s identity, empowering regional political forces, and shaping the state’s social and political landscape.
