Guwahati Imposes Strict Rules at Zubeen Garg Cremation Site: No Alcohol, Visiting Hours 6 AM–10 PM

The District Magistrate of Kamrup Metropolitan, Sumit Sattawan, has issued a formal order to preserve the sanctity and dignity of the cremation site of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg at Hatimura, Kamarkuchi, Guwahati. The directive follows widespread public attention to the site, which has become a place of homage for thousands of fans since the singer’s untimely death in Singapore on September 19.

According to the order, the cremation ground will remain open to visitors daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Entry beyond these hours will be strictly prohibited. This step aims to regulate the large number of people visiting the site and ensure that it remains peaceful and well-maintained. Visitors are encouraged to pay their respects within these fixed hours in an orderly and respectful manner.

The order also enforces a strict ban on alcohol consumption, serving, and distribution within the cremation ground and its surrounding areas. Anyone found under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances will not be allowed entry. This prohibition has been implemented to prevent any act of disrespect or disturbance at the site. Authorities emphasized that Zubeen Garg’s resting place should remain a sacred and serene location, symbolizing love and reverence rather than disorderly gatherings.

District Magistrate Sattawan issued this directive after holding consultations with local stakeholders, including representatives of the local community, law enforcement agencies, and members of fan associations. These discussions were aimed at finding ways to balance public access with the need to maintain order, cleanliness, and decorum. The cremation site has seen a steady flow of fans, artists, and admirers visiting daily to pay their last respects, leading to concerns about crowd management, littering, and security.

Signboards displaying the visiting hours and restrictions are expected to be placed around the site for public awareness.

Officials have also been directed to take strict action against any violations of the order, including the use of alcohol or any other behavior deemed disrespectful to the memory of the late artist. The administration has stressed that these measures are preventive and not punitive, intended to safeguard the sanctity of the site while accommodating the emotions of Zubeen’s fans.
