Mortal Remains of Renowned Flutist Dipak Sarma Brought to Guwahati for Last Rites

The mortal remains of celebrated Assamese flutist Dipak Sarma, who passed away in Chennai on Monday morning, were brought to Guwahati on November 3 for his final rites. The distinguished musician, aged 57, had been undergoing treatment for a rare liver ailment at a Chennai hospital for several weeks. Before being airlifted for advanced medical care, he had been admitted to a hospital in Guwahati, where his health condition deteriorated, leading to his transfer to Chennai. Despite medical efforts, the acclaimed artiste succumbed to his illness, leaving behind an immense void in Assam’s cultural and musical landscape.

A special chartered flight carrying his mortal remains departed from Chennai around 5 a.m. and landed in Guwahati shortly afterward. Upon arrival, his body was taken to his residence in Ambikagiri Nagar, where family members and close associates gathered to perform traditional rituals and pay their personal tributes to the late musician. The atmosphere at his residence was filled with grief and reverence as relatives, friends, and well-wishers came together to honor the memory of the legendary flutist, who was known for his humility, discipline, and deep devotion to music.

To allow the public to pay their final respects, arrangements were made to keep his body at Seuj Sangha from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Fans, admirers, cultural organizations, and members of Assam’s artistic fraternity gathered there to offer floral tributes and bid farewell to one of the state’s most beloved musicians. Emotional scenes were witnessed as people from all walks of life came forward to pay homage to the artiste who had touched countless hearts through his mesmerizing flute melodies. Many recalled his immense contribution to the propagation and preservation of Assamese classical and folk music, which he had enriched with his soulful and deeply expressive performances.

After the public homage, his mortal remains were to be taken to the Navagraha crematorium in Guwahati for the final rites. The last journey of the maestro was marked by solemn respect and reverence, with the presence of musicians, cultural figures, and admirers who came to witness his final farewell.
