Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the state in paying heartfelt tribute to the legendary musician, poet, and cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, on his 14th death anniversary on November 5. Reaffirming Hazarika’s timeless influence as the “Bard of the Brahmaputra,” Sarma announced a series of large-scale celebrations across Assam to honour his life, music, and message of humanity.

As part of the commemoration, Sarma revealed that over two lakh people from across the state would come together to sing Bhupen Hazarika’s most celebrated song, “Manuhe Manuhor Babe,” while forming a human chain symbolising unity and compassion — two ideals central to Hazarika’s philosophy. The Chief Minister highlighted that special programmes have been organised in 35 districts and 27 sub-districts, where nearly 5,000 students, youths, and residents in each district will perform the iconic song simultaneously.

Sarma further announced that the Assam government will appeal to the United Nations to officially recognise “Manuhe Manuhor Babe” as a “song of humanity,” acknowledging its universal message of love, equality, and social harmony. This initiative, he said, would help take Hazarika’s vision to a global audience and celebrate Assam’s rich cultural heritage on an international platform.

In addition to the tribute events, the state government has introduced several initiatives to honour Bhupen Hazarika during his birth centenary year. One of the most ambitious projects is the construction of a 100-foot statue of the music legend near the Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dhola-Sadiya bridge) — one of India’s longest bridges named after him. Sarma also announced that one road in each of Assam’s districts will be dedicated to Hazarika’s name as a lasting tribute to his contributions to music, art, and social consciousness.

According to Sarma, the centenary celebrations had already begun earlier in the year, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reflecting the national significance of Bhupen Hazarika’s legacy. The closing ceremony of the centenary year will take place at Bharat Mandapam, one of India’s premier cultural venues, marking the culmination of a yearlong series of events celebrating his life and works.

Sarma also revealed that a new Swahid Smark (Martyrs’ Memorial) will be inaugurated on December 10, coinciding with special performances of “Swahid Pronamu Tumak” across the state. These initiatives, he said, are part of the government’s broader effort to promote Assam’s cultural identity while preserving the ideals of peace, unity, and resilience that Bhupen Hazarika championed throughout his life.

Born on September 8, 1926, in Sadiya (present-day Tinsukia district), Dr. Bhupen Hazarika remains one of Assam’s most beloved and influential cultural figures. Revered as “Sudhakantha” (The Nightingale of Assam), Hazarika was not only a singer and composer but also a lyricist, poet, filmmaker, and social reformer whose songs transcended language and regional boundaries. His music carried powerful messages of humanity, social justice, and unity, resonating deeply across generations.

Through his unparalleled artistry, Bhupen Hazarika immortalised the spirit and soul of the Brahmaputra, using music as a bridge between people, cultures, and communities. The state’s tribute underlines his enduring relevance — a reminder that even decades after his passing, Hazarika’s songs continue to inspire millions to dream of a world built on love, equality, and mutual respect.
