Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tribute to India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, on the occasion of his birth anniversary, which is observed every year on November 14. Modi shared his respects through a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he acknowledged Nehru’s significant contributions to India’s history, governance, and freedom struggle. His message read: “Tributes to former Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ji on the occasion of his birth anniversary.” This gesture reflects the tradition of honouring India’s key national leaders, irrespective of political differences, on important commemorative occasions.

Jawaharlal Nehru, born on November 14, 1889, in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) in Uttar Pradesh, played a pivotal role in shaping modern India. Coming from a highly educated and politically active family led by Motilal Nehru, he grew up in an environment deeply engaged with India’s growing political consciousness. He evolved into one of the most influential leaders of the Indian National Congress, eventually becoming a central figure in India’s long struggle for independence from British colonial rule.

Nehru worked closely with Mahatma Gandhi, and his vision for India was rooted in democratic values, secularism, scientific progress, and social justice. As a freedom fighter, he endured long periods of imprisonment but remained committed to the quest for an independent and united India. His political ideology combined nationalism with a progressive outlook, marking him as one of the most modern and forward-thinking leaders of his time.

After India gained independence on August 15, 1947, Nehru became the nation’s first Prime Minister, a position he held until his death in 1964. His tenure, spanning nearly 17 years, set the foundation for India’s political, economic, and social frameworks. Nehru placed strong emphasis on institution-building, scientific research, and technological development. His initiatives led to the establishment of premier institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and various national laboratories. He was also instrumental in promoting India’s foreign policy vision of non-alignment during the Cold War era, helping India maintain independence in its international relations.

Under Nehru’s leadership, India adopted a parliamentary democratic system, which remains one of the world’s most enduring democratic frameworks. His commitment to social harmony, pluralism, and inclusive growth continues to shape India’s national identity.

Nehru passed away on May 27, 1964, leaving behind a vast legacy as a nation-builder, intellectual, and visionary leader. His birth anniversary is also celebrated as Children’s Day across India, reflecting his deep affection for children and his belief that they represent the future of the nation.

Prime Minister Modi’s tribute this year serves as a reminder of Nehru’s enduring impact on India’s development and his role in guiding the newly independent nation through one of the most critical periods in its history. By acknowledging his contributions, the country continues to honour one of the architects of modern India.
