The Indian Postal Department has honoured Assam’s legendary singer, composer, and cultural icon Zubeen Garg by releasing a special commemorative postcard on the occasion of his 53rd birth anniversary. This significant tribute was unveiled during the 98th Howly Raas Mahotsav, one of the region’s most prominent cultural celebrations, held on Wednesday night. The launch drew widespread appreciation from the audience, who viewed it as a noteworthy recognition of Zubeen Garg’s immense contribution to Assamese culture and music.
The ceremonial unveiling was led by Colonel Aravind Verma, the Chief Postmaster General of the Assam Postal Circle. He was accompanied by several key dignitaries, including Hemen Das, President of the Raas Mahotsav Celebration Committee, and Dr. Bhushan Chandra Pathak, Principal of B.H. College and a distinguished author. Their presence underscored the cultural significance and formal importance of the event.
In his address, Colonel Verma described the commemorative postcard as a heartfelt gesture dedicated to an artist whose influence transcends generations. He emphasized that Zubeen Garg’s legacy is not confined to his music alone, but extends to the values he embodies—particularly his kindness, compassion, and deep connection with the people. According to Verma, these timeless qualities have made Zubeen not only a beloved figure in Assam but also an inspiration to countless individuals across India.
Colonel Verma further highlighted that Zubeen Garg's impact reaches far beyond the borders of Assam and India. His musical creations, humanitarian work, and cultural leadership have earned him admiration globally. The special postcard, he noted, would serve as a medium to spread Zubeen’s message and artistic legacy to even wider audiences, symbolizing the global resonance of his contributions.
The Chief Postmaster General expressed confidence that the commemorative postcard would help celebrate and preserve Zubeen’s ideals. Through this initiative, the Postal Department aims to honour his artistic journey and ensure that his contributions continue to inspire future generations.
The unveiling of the postcard at the Howly Raas Mahotsav added a meaningful cultural depth to the long-running festival. The Raas Mahotsav, known for its celebration of Assamese heritage, traditional art forms, and community spirit, provided a fitting backdrop for such a tribute. The release not only reflected the admiration the Assamese people hold for Zubeen Garg but also symbolized the blending of cultural traditions with modern recognition.
Overall, the commemorative postcard stands as a significant tribute to one of Assam’s most cherished artists. It acknowledges Zubeen Garg's role as a cultural bridge, an artistic powerhouse, and a humanitarian whose work has touched millions. The thoughtful gesture by the Indian Postal Department highlights the importance of celebrating regional icons whose influence enriches both local heritage and the broader national cultural landscape.
